Competitive BBQ consists of a lot of different aspects that bring competitors from all around the world into the sport. It’s profitable, tasty, great networking, skill-building, and most of all it’s extremely fun! My experience is that there are no cooler people than at a KCBS or PNWBA competition while you’re grilling and drinking overnight. It’s a blast!
I’ve put together some information about my favorite BBQ competitions to share with you all! So far I’ve been involved in KCBS, PNWBA, and SCA competitions, so those are the competitions I will focus on for the time being.
SCA - Steak Cookoff Association
A nationwide cooking competition focused primarily on cooking Ribeye Steaks. Other categories include: appetizers, ribs, chicken wings, burgers, grilled cheese, pork chops, and even mixed drinks among much more
KCBS - Kansas City Barbeque Society
KCBS is probably the largest national BBQ competition in the United States. It’s hosted in other countries as well. With over 500 competitions in a normal year leading up to one yearly championship entitled “The American Royal”. KCBS is a competition in wood/charcoal fired pork butt, pork ribs, chicken, and brisket. Most competitions include side entries.
PNWBA - Pacific Northwest BBQ Association
Much like KCBS the entries primarily revolve around: pork butt, pork ribs, chicken, and brisket. Although most competitions include a side or dessert entry as well. This competition is based in the Pacific Northwest Region of the United States.
