Frequently Asked Questions:
What is the ‘competition BBQ equipment list’?
This list is intended to encompass things that I think are important to a PNWBA or KCBS style BBQ competition. A lot of the things on this list are also important for backyard grilling or for full-on catering. But the main intention of the list is to tell you everything you will (or could) need for a competition BBQ event.

How should I use this list?
Use this list at your own free will honestly. I don’t mean rip the list off and put it on your own site or anything. You’re more than welcome to link it if you want. But share it with your team and share it with your friends and use it to compete. In my ideal world, my competition knows exactly what I know and I still beat them ;).
Do I need everything on the list?
No, not necessarily. But there are some things on the list that you do need. I will try to be very clear which items those are. There are a few different reasons I would categorize something as a necessity rather than a nicety, here they are:
- It’s required by the contest – Some food safety and fire safety equipment is necessary per the contest rules.
- It’s a must have to succeed – Some things you cannot succeed without. Imagine trying to compete without a grill; pretty difficult to do.
- It’s required for reasonable comfort – These are items required to survive the marathon that a competition is. (e.g. shelter, clothing, etc.)
You don’t need it all, but you need some.
Where should I buy items on the list?
If I know of a good place to purchase something on the list or have a brand that I recommend, I will let you know. Also, if the link is to an affiliate or sponsor I will let you know. Otherwise, try your usual spots: local hardware & BBQ stores, Amazon, etc.
